There was a great interest in foreign travel in the 1950s, and a fascination with Africa in particular. Exotic images of tribal dances and animal skin patterns popped up on glassware, fabrics and ceramics, such as this dish for Wade and the Zambesi pattern coffee pot by Jessie Tait. It is nice therefore to come across an original piece from the period like this Original Oil on Board painting from Mali. Fantastic graphic imagery - almost silhouette figures with a splash of vibrant yellow. Complete in the original frame, 70x50 cms, this is a unique statement piece for any Modernist Interior. This stunning dressing table is part of a bedroom suite by Irish designer Brendan Dunne (1916-1995).
Dublin born, Brendan was a musical prodigy at an early age, eventually becoming a professional composer and occasional conductor for the National Symphony Orchestra, and named his Scandinavian inspired designs after musical notes - this rare mahogany bedroom suite is called the ‘A minor suite.’ Kirkmodern are proud to have sourced this rare suite for the National Museum of Ireland, and it will now become part of the permanent collection and be added to their comprehensive archive of Irish designed furniture.

....but getting there. My collection of Upsala-Ekeby pieces by Hjordis Oldfors is nearly complete now that this stunning vase (with original label) has just arrived. Designed in 1954, these Kokos pieces are all hand crafted, each one slightly different, and are extremely hard to find. They are really tactile pieces with rich matte dark chocolate finish incised with deep cuts of bright yellow glaze.Very understated and extremely elegant.

This time it's official. A retro expert in Oz has confirmed that boomerang tables are definitely coming back. The lucky people attending the Dublin Flea tomorrow 25th, RetroRooms in Belfast on 2nd Oct and MidCentury Modern, Bristol on the 9th Oct, will be the first to get their hands on these newly arrived orange formica boomerang side tables (available for right and left handed retro fans) before they fly away. One of the less well recognized designers at Rorstrand is Inger Persson. Her brightly coloured POP range in the 60s is probably her best known design, this candlestick vase is typical of the range with great saturated colours, and for the serious collector the 'must have' is the teapot in orange. The Dublin Flea is on this Sunday and apart from the usual great selection of retro vintage pieces, great tea, coffee and food the Fleas will be embracing the Streetfeast - a great initiative to encourage communities to put on a street party in their area. Check out their website www.streetfeast.ie - so on the 28th we will be lining the outside of the market with tables and chairs and want you guys to bring a dish to share with everyone. One of the major designers of the 20th century, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was widely regarded as one of the pioneering masters of Modern Architecture. HOMEWORK

Sometimes beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This vintage 2 seater sofa was in a sorry state when it arrived. It was being used as a garden seat and was sun bleached and watermarked. Look beyond the damage and you will see a Scandinavian gem, albeit in a rough state, solid teak frame with beautifully turned and tapered legs. Restoration is underway, the wood is being brought back to life and next stage is to choose fabric and we have decided on using this original fabric designed by legendary Danish designer Nanna Ditzel in 1965. Always exciting to see the transformation as an original piece being brought back to life and I will post updates as the project progresses.

Great piece in Sunday Times today in the Home|Interiors section by Dara Flynn. Down to Earth features some great Ercol which "is enjoying a revival" and is being "relentlessly snatched up at British Vintage fairs" and "hard to come by in Ireland". Kirkmodern has long been a fan of Ercol's smooth clean contemporary lines and one of the most iconic pieces has to be the Pebble nest of tables in solid elm. Cool and elegant mid century design at its best.

One of the best fabric designs of the early 1950s surely has to be this 'hourglass' design by W.Hertzberger for Turnbull & Stockdale. Designed in 1954, it was so directional at the time it was featured in the 1957 Studio Year Book. We have sourced some cushions in this fabric, and the combination of vibrant colours and atomic graphics can make the dullest chair look cutting edge! A great way to bring some directional MidMod style to your home without splashing out on new furniture.
