STEP UP

We have been sourcing reclaimed wooden ladders for some of our contract work and they have proved really popular for display and storage. We are now offering some of these pieces for sale as they are becoming increasingly popular with interior design magazines re-purposed as towel rails, hanging storage in a contemporary kitchen setting, or hung sideways as book shelves. We have a few different sizes of wooden ladders, all cleaned, stripped and waxed, and a few smaller pieces like this rare folding 'Clerk's Stool' with a lovely sloping top - really comfortable as an occasional stool and perfect as a small step ladder. DANISH DELIGHT

Sometimes a piece of furniture arrives in stock and you just know it is a little bit special, and this is one of those pieces. A beautifully finished teak sidetable designed by J Andersen for Silkeborg Mobler c1960, this is a craftsman piece which is handfinished with sleek tapered legs and bevelled rolled edge top. Set into the teak is a tiled panel for hot coffee pots etc and the design of the tile is typically Scandinavian of the period. The design, balance and finish on this table make it a top notch piece of mid-century Danish design. Dimensions are 60x37cms x 51tall. For more information on this or other designer pieces in stock please contact geoff@kirkmodern.com.

ONE TO WATCH

Scandinavian ceramics have never been more sought after, and it's tempting to stick to the big names like Stig Lindberg, Upsala-Ekeby, Rorstrand, but there were lots of very creative small studios producing excellent work through the mid-century period. One name to watch out for is Laholm Keramik from Sweden, their work is not so well known yet and so prices are still reasonable. This elegant tall vase in striking monochrome matte glaze is a great example - a fantastic simple graphic design on a striking shape and very reminiscent of the work of Lindberg and Nylund but at a fraction of the cost.
